Forget Self-Driving Cars, Self-Flying Cars Could Arrive First
Company predicts autopilot-enabled AeroMobils within the decade.
In
all the excitement over things that no one seems to want but everyone
will one day get regardless, like the Apple Watch and self-driving cars,
we, the people of the internet, seem to have forgotten all about flying
cars. Everyone was all about flying cars a few years ago,
but then 3-D printing came along, and then the iPhone 6, and then “the
dress,” and well, it’s safe to say we kind of lost our way. Fortunately,
the people who actually make things have been staying on topic, which
is why we may see flying cars on the road/in the sky as soon as 2017, if
AeroMobil has its way.
The AeroMobil, in its current (third) iteration, is small enough to fit into a normal parking space, uses regular gasoline, and is legal to drive on public roads. And of course, it also flies. It’s legal to use at any airport, and it can take off and land on any grass strip or paved surface that is at least 200 yards long.
Vaculik spoke at the SXSW conference recently, where he promised that his flying cars will be on sale as soon as 2017.
Although the AeroMobil CEO likes to speak of a future “revolution in transportation,” he is well aware of who his flying cars will appeal to: “wealthy supercar buyers.” Vaculik declined to specify a target price, but said that the first models on sale would go for several hundred thousand dollars.
AeroMobil plans to follow up its initial two-seater with a four-seat model that will also be self-flying (i.e. it will have autopilot). We’re hoping the self-flying model is the one that takes off, if only because the super-wealthy don’t have a very good reputation for being capable pilots.
